Lalit Modi's Big SECRET About IPL; 'I Broke Every Rule in the Book That Day...'
Lalit Modi, who started IPL (Indian Premier League), has now made a big revelation about IPL. He said that when the first IPL match was played in the year 2008, he had broken many rules.
The first match was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore (KKR vs RCB). At that time, many questions were raised about the success of IPL. Lalit Modi believed that the league will be successful only if the first match reaches as many people as possible.
The problem was that at that time the broadcasting rights of IPL were with Sony channel. But this channel was not a big enough network to show the match everywhere. Because of this Modi decided that he would let all the channels broadcast the match, even if he had to break the rules of the contract for this.
In fact, Lalit Modi himself told in Michael Clarke's podcast that Sony had warned him that this is against the rules and a case will be filed against him for this, but he replied that first show the match and then file a case.
This decision enabled the first IPL matches to reach a very wide audience, and the league gained tremendous popularity right from the start.
However, this decision also led to many controversies. In 2009, Lalit Modi was accused of breaking the contract with Sony and other partners, benefiting World Sports Group and committing many legal irregularities. Later, due to many controversies like match fixing, illegal betting, Modi was removed from the post of IPL commissioner.
Later, Lalit Modi (Lalit Modi on IPL) signed a new agreement, under which Sony was again given the broadcasting rights till 2017. The deal was worth around US $ 1.63 billion (about Rs 8200 crore).
In this deal, World Sports Group (WSG) had to pay compensation of about Rs 425 crore in exchange for giving up its claims. This is where the controversy started. BCCI alleged that Modi went beyond his powers and changed the contract and benefited WSG.
The matter escalated and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) began investigating. These allegations and investigations are still a major part of the ongoing cases against Modi.
